Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the idea that a company should focus on more than just the bottom line by also investing in its people and the community. Most business leaders support this idea, however there are some questions about how companies should be investing in CSR and what that investment should look like in today’s society. In this 2-hour interactive session, you will join CSR Consultants Cliff Yee and Carol Chin-Fatt from Raffa, P.C. to explore effective, impactful CSR strategies for small businesses. Topics and discussion will include: the broad scope of CSR, case studies to illustrate best practices, how and why you should create a purpose-driven culture, and how to craft and implement the right tactics for your organization.

Presentation from Salesforce.org Higher Ed Summit 2018 by: Katie Connor, Career Development, Bailey Aukes, Career Communications & Analytics Specialist, and Kelly Hamilton, Career Operations Coordinator. Over the past 3 years, the Career Development Office at the Leeds School of Business has built a comprehensive 4-year data collection strategy leveraging the integration of Qualtrics and Salesforce. This approach has allowed us to better understand student career interests and challenges in order to customize career programming, student communication, and employer outreach. From an initial focus on senior progress and outcomes, we expanded data collection efforts through the implementation of the Leeds Personal Business Plan starting in the freshman year. This Plan is integrated into classroom assignments and updated by all students throughout their college career. As a result of these efforts, we now have over 50,000 data points, ranging from first-years through seniors, regarding company/industry interests and career development needs. Our strategy has improved both student and employer engagement, increased student response rates, and consistently led to an over 95% knowledge rate of senior outcomes. Attendees at this session will learn how the powerful combination of Qualtrics integration with Salesforce can be used to develop a comprehensive picture of student interests and needs. Participants will learn how they can leverage this information to develop targeted communication and intervention strategies to support student success. This is the deck from a talk we gave on Bringing the Outside In: Collaborating with External Stakeholders to Discover Insights and Build Big Ideas at the 2013 Cincinnati Innovation Summit. Involving key stakeholders in innovation is a critical, but often overlooked criterion for success. Suppliers, influencers, third party buyers, customer gate keepers and other partners are not only critical to an initiative’s success, but they often have insight that can lead to bigger, better ideas. This breakout session will share the importance of involving external stakeholders in the process of generating insights that lead to ideas; and in the process of developing, piloting and launching new initiatives. We’ll share 2-3 case studies to inspire participants to build an action plan (template to be provided) to map key stakeholders and specific action steps to involve them in a current or future innovation initiative.

NAF developed a next-generation assessment system designed to model real-world demands, including the integrated application of academic, career-technical and workforce readiness skills. Designed to bridge the gap among high school career-technical programs, post-secondary course articulation, admission policies and workforce readiness, Student Certification Assessment System (SCAS) assesses a broad range of content and skills through rigorous end-of-course exams and evidence-based portfolios combined with supervisor and teacher feedback. This open and interactive panel session will explore benefits and opportunities while providing a problem-oriented approach to implementing and supporting SCAS. Panelists will represent different perspectives, and will be able to offer unique solutions and share practical ideas.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
